ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY, Va. — Staff members of Isle of Wight County Schools will work virtually on Friday and Monday amid the closure of the James River Bridge, which is expected to create traffic headaches.
The schedule change aligns with the student holiday on Feb. 1, 2 and 5. Feb. 6 will be a regular school day.
Single-lane closures in both directions on the bridge could begin as early as 7 p.m. Thursday, February 1. Then, from 1 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, the bridge will be fully closed to all traffic, including boats that require a bridge lift.
"The closures will significantly impact traffic throughout the Hampton Roads area, resulting in uncertainty for when IWCS employees from outside of the county, or even in the Carrollton area of the county, would arrive at work," the school system wrote online.
