SMITHFIELD, Va. — One person has been charged following an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Foursquare Road in Isle of Wight County.
Brad Kenneth Spafford is charged in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia with one count of possession of a firearm in violation of the National Firearms Act, according to court documents.
Spafford appeared in court Wednesday and has a detention hearing set for Dec. 23, with a preliminary hearing set for Jan. 3.
Officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigation were on scene on Foursquare Road in Isle of Wight County beginning on Tuesday into Wednesday. Spafford was arrested Tuesday, according to inmate information available through Western Tidewater Regional Jail.
“I can confirm the FBI is present in Smithfield, VA along Foursquare Road conducting court authorized law enforcement activity,” an FBI spokesperson stated by email on Wednesday.
In addition, “I can assure nearby residents that the ongoing activity poses no threat to public safety,” the spokesperson added.
The FBI declined to answer further questions and directed inquiries to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia. That office provided court documents but otherwise declined to answer questions.
