'He intended to kill the victim' | Court documents detail attempted home invasion in Carrollton

Isle of Wight deputies arrested 56-year-old Gregory Davis. He now faces four charges including 2nd degree attempted murder.

ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY, Va. — Court documents from Isle of Wight County detailed a harrowing attempted home invasion that sent one woman to the hospital with critical injuries.

According to investigators, a woman heard someone trying to open her front door and saw a man outside of her house on Monday, October 23rd.

Deputies said the victim told the man to leave and threatened to call 911. At some point, investigators said the man opened fire.

"The male fired a single round through her door, she then retreated to the rear of her residence and was trying to make her way upstairs when he fired a second round through the door and it struck her," said Captain Tommy Potter, with Isle of Wight County Sheriff's Office.

By the time first responders arrived, they found the victim inside her home suffering from a critical gunshot wound in her leg, and a man in the driveway holding a gun.

Deputies arrested the man and identified him as 56-year-old Gregory Davis.

The victim's family said the attack came 'completely unprovoked,' and said the alleged attacker is the victim's next door neighbor.

"We did interview the suspect in this case, he gave a number of varying statements, which leads us to believe there may be some mental health issues at hand," said Potter.

Court documents reveal Davis intended to kill the victim as he saw the victim scream and "he could see her go up the stairs through the window next to the door... then fired a second round."

The victim's family said they are still coming to terms with the violence, and the gunshot wound could have caused 'permanent disfigurement' to the victim.

Davis is currently being held without bond at Western Tidewater Regional Jail on charges of attempted 2nd degree murder, malicious wounding, two counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling, attempted burglary to commit murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Longtime neighbors said they watched the shocking scene from their doorsteps. Residents said they know both the victim, and her alleged attacker.

"The lady comes and goes and mostly minds her own business," said one neighbor who wished to remain anonymous. "The guy, I've seen him before, never noticed anything really bad, but I hope she's okay."

Davis is expected to face a judge on October 25th for his arraignment.
