Is Black Friday losing its steam?

The number of people visiting stores on Black Friday dropped 4.5 percent in 2017. Online sales the same day were up 16.9 percent.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) — Black Friday may not carry the same weight it once did, and online shopping has a lot to do with it.

According to RetailNext, the number of people visiting stores on Black Friday dropped 4.5 percent in 2017.

Online sales the same day were up 16.9 percent.

Add to that BestBlackFriday.com reports there are more Thanksgiving day closures for major retailers than ever before. 60 of them in total, including Nordstrom, Costco, and TJMAXX, will wait until Friday to open their doors.

But Black Friday is in no way dead just yet.

The travel industry, specifically airlines, are joining the fray and you could see big sales on flights to your favorite holiday destination.

The bigger values may come into play on a business class upgrade or on travel packages that airlines offer alongside hotels and rental cars.
