$4.4M in funding to be split among 15 transportation projects, including HRT

The 15 projects aim to enhance transit use across the Commonwealth by improving bus stops and safety for riders and drivers.

NORFOLK, Va. — Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) is one of 15 projects that the Commonwealth Transportation Board approved to split $4.4. million in funding from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation’s (DRPT) Transit Ridership Incentive Program (TRIP).

The 15 projects aim to enhance transit use across the Commonwealth by improving bus stops and safety for riders and drivers. This includes addressing concerns with accessibility for low-income riders and passenger amenities.

“Ensuring that people feel safe and dignified when using transit services is essential to improving the rider experience, and these projects approved help do just that,” said Jennifer DeBruhl, Director of the Virginia DRPT.

With the allocated funding, HRT will install lighting and security features in shelters at three existing ferry stops to help accessibility for riders in the evening hours. Benches, shelters and trash cans will be added to 22 stops.

Additionally, more than 150 buses will be equipped with safety barriers for added protection of drivers.

Since TRIP's inception, DRPT has provided $24.5 million in funding to nine multi-year zero-fare or low income projects, $11.6 million to eleven multi-year regional connectivity projects, $3 million to nine passenger amenities projects and $1.3 million to five public safety projects.
