HAMPTON — HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- A group of high school football players came together Memorial Day to remember a teammate who was killed earlier this month.
Daquan Robinson, 16, of Hampton High School, died when a pickup truck struck his moped from behind while he was waiting at a traffic light on May 14.
Robinson attended Hampton High School and played football. His friends and teammates held a game at Buckroe Beach in his honor.
From every touchdown to every tackle, the students said Robinson was on their mind every play.
“I mean, we are playing in remembrance of him. He was a good friend of all of ours, either we play with him or against him. We all miss him and love him,” said Malik Hardy.
Some of the players were teammates with Robinson at Hampton High School, while others play for rival Phoebus, but none of that mattered on Memorial Day, they were all unified.
“I miss him a lot. He was a great player and a great friend. I knew him since we were in middle school, really young, playing rec league together,” said Amir Fowlkes.
“As we were playing he would like showboat, stuff like that, even get you mad sometimes, but you couldn’t do nothing but laugh,” said Robinson's cousin, Kimani Jacobs.
Robinson’s aunt said her family owes all these young men a great big thank you.
“They came up to the hospital the night that it happened. They’ve been with my sister from like the first day it happened, and they’ve been sticking by the family, all the football players from different schools,” said Robinson's aunt Sherwanda Robinson.
The deadly accident happened at West Pembroke Avenue and Powhatan Parkway. Another teen, also on the moped, was taken to the hospital in stable condition. The accident remains under investigation.
“No one has come to say sorry to my sister, my family, it’s very hurtful right now, someone out here has killed our loved one, and nothing has been done about it,” said Robinson.
These players plan to hold a game every Memorial Day for Daquan. He’ll always be their MVP. They said his favorite saying was “ball out,” because he just loved to play.
