Gloucester man charged with attempted murder and kidnapping of his own grandmother; accused of threatening her with a knife

The 78-year-old grandmother stabbed her 23-year-old grandson in an act of self-defense, according to officials with the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office.

GLOUCESTER, Va. — A 23-year-old man faces multiple charges including attempted second-degree murder and abduction after allegedly attacking his own grandmother in Gloucester County, according to a criminal complaint.

On Saturday, the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office responded to a call reporting a domestic incident on Yacht Club Road, which is near the Guinea area of the county.

When deputies arrived, they found two people seriously injured. One person was suffering from a stab wound to the chest and was transported to the Riverside Regional Hospital while the second person had multiple injuries and was transported to Riverside Walter Reed.

The person with the stab wound is identified as the suspect, Joseph Fabula, and the victim is his grandmother and caretaker.

The complaint states that during a verbal argument, Fabula became angry at his grandmother, which led to him jumping on her and laying his weight on top of her. She is 78 years old.

The complaint goes on to say Fabula repeatedly kicked her "over and over again" in the knee she recently had repaired by surgery. After she managed to temporarily escape, Fabula allegedly removed a key that was in a deadbolt to one of the house's doors, while taking her phone and keys and telling her she was not allowed to leave.

Fabula began making verbal threats, and after seeing his grandmother grab a knife for self-defense (according to GCSO) grabbed one himself and "began chasing" her.

After pleading with Fabula:

"She then punched out with the knife in her hand and stabbed him in the one place she could reach, which was his left breast."

Fabula was arrested and charged with attempted murder, attempted aggravated malicious wounding, and abduction.
