VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- The name "Farm Fresh" will remain at two locations in Hampton Roads, along with the chain's extremely popular fried chicken.
Chris Lee of Virginia Beach is buying the stores at 799 Chimney Hill Shopping Center in Virginia Beach and 353 Chatham Drive in Newport News.
"Having lived here my entire life and currently operating stores in the Hampton Roads area, I'm pleased to have this great opportunity to continue the Farm Fresh brand," said Lee. "As with our other stores, we'll have a strong focus on the fresh departments and offer the products and solutions today’s shoppers require from their local grocer."
Lee already operates other independent grocery stores in Virginia: Grand Mart in Virginia Beach and J&J International Market in Woodbridge.
SUPERVALU INC. announced in March it would sell or close supermarkets that bore the Farm Fresh name.
Lee's locations in Virginia Beach and Newport News will keep the moniker. He plans to keep as many of the current jobs as possible.
Neighborhood Holdings LLC of Charlottesville said Monday it would purchase the Farm Fresh location in Richmond.
SUPERVALU will continue to supply the Chimney Hill, Chatham Drive, and Richmond locations and making its private label products, including Essential Everyday, Wild Harvest, and Culinary Circle available for purchase.
A spokesman for SUPERVALU INC. said Monday that the company still had three locations in Hampton Roads open:
- 460 Wythe Creek Road, Poquoson
- 113 Norge Lane, Williamsburg
- 928 Diamond Springs Road, Virginia Beach
SUPERVALU extended employment to workers at those locations as it continues to explore selling the stores.
