NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Going back to school can be tough on students and some of that anxiety can show up in their behavior.
CHKD offers behavioral health services for parents, whether the problems are brought on by the stress of school or health concerns, says Mitzi Glass, Behavioral Health, LCSW.
What is pediatric behavioral health?
- The terms "behavioral health" and "mental health" are often used interchangeably. Perhaps the term "behavioral health" is less stigmatized than "mental health," so a kinder, gentler name opens doors that might otherwise remain closed for folks.
- ·Behavior is an aspect of identity that can be changed, so "behavioral health" might be a more hopeful concept for those who experience conditions that may be seen as permanent parts of their lives
- ·It's a way of being inclusive and creating a network of care and services that addresses the child's healthcare needs as an individual, in the family and in the community.
- ·Behavioral health includes not only ways of promoting well-being by preventing or intervening in conditions such as depression, anxiety, acute or chronic illness, coping and anger management but also aims at preventing or intervening in substance abuse or other addictions.
What should a parent expect at an appointment?
- Screening children's development and behavior is a significant aspect of pediatric care and that optimal development and behavior are critical for children's success in school and in life. We are seeing a significant disconnect with many of today's children where they aren't learning how to interact with others, how to manage painful emotions, and how to return to resilient high functioning kids.
- ·A team of licensed clinicians that have the skills and training in a variety of therapies to assist children such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Play Therapy, Family Systems, Solutions Focused and Motivational Interviewing.
- ·Screening to determine the level of risk and define the need for services. There are a number of screening and assessment tools available for different aspects of developmental, behavioral and emotional health.
- ·Evidence-based evaluation, planning and treatment designed specifically for your child.
- ·Use of a validated, published instrument at regular intervals in their child's development and/or when you or the parent has concerns about development.
- ·We provide 24-hour coverage, 7 days a week.
- ·Our brief "episode of care" model is client centered to achieve targeted goals and return the child to optimal functioning. This is the premise of our program, managing everyday problems with evidence based treatments.
Can parents call for an appointment or do they need a referral?
- ·We strongly advise that parents seek a referral from their primary care physician.
- ·Our referrals are physician/provider driven which allows for our team to collaborate and communicate with the same provider that manages your child's overall health and wellness. We are an integrated program model with good communication to enhance the client experience.
- ·CHKD is committed to making a difference in the lives of children and their families by providing a comprehensive health program serving children, adolescents and young adults suffering from chronic health issues and behavioral challenges.
