NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of an inmate in custody at Norfolk City Jail on Wednesday morning.
A deputy found 56-year-old John McCall unresponsive around 1:29 a.m., a news release said.
McCall appears to have suffered a medical episode moments before being discovered by the deputy, officials said.
The jail's medical team and EMS attempted life-saving measures but he was pronounced dead around 1:49 a.m.
McCall was arrested by EVMS Police on May 6 and charged with trespass. He was not given a bond.
In a news release, Norfolk Sheriff's Office said McCall received a comprehensive medical screening when he was booked into the jail.
McCall had a chronic, existing medical condition for which he was receiving treatment.
The sheriff's office said his medical information will not be released due to privacy restrictions of the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA).
NSO said it will conduct an internal review, and the Norfolk Police Department will conduct a death investigation.
There are no indications of foul play or suicide. Official cause and manner of death will be determined by the medical examiner.
