Virginia sees 'very high' levels of respiratory illnesses, health officials warn

While they're seeing a lot of cases, UVA's director of hospital epidemiology says it's not quite to the level of the year before.

VIRGINIA, USA — The latest Centers for Disease Control numbers released on Friday reveal Virginia and North Carolina are experiencing "very high" levels of sickness.

The report shows a jump in people testing positive for the flu last week, with an increase of 18%.

Besides the flu, hospital admissions for COVID-19 rose 20% and more people are testing positive for RSV.

Dr. Costi Sifri, the director of hospital epidemiology at the University of Virginia Health, says that while they're seeing a lot of cases, it's not quite to the level of the year before.

"I think we're in the middle of it. I think we should find this as no surprise and it's probably going to be continuing now for at least several weeks, a couple months before we start to see reduced rates," said Dr. Sifri.

The CDC estimates there have been at least 10 million illnesses, 110,000 hospitalizations, and 6,500 deaths from the flu so far this season.
