Swimming advisory lifted for southern part of Buckroe Beach

Officials said anyone who came into contact with the water could face an elevated risk.

HAMPTON, Va. — UPDATE: VDH shared an update Thursday saying the swimming advisory is no longer in effect since testing shows bacteria levels have returned to state quality standards.

PREVIOUS STORY: Swimmers are urged to stay out of the water near the Buckroe South pier in Hampton after discovering toxic bacteria in the area.

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) issued a swimming advisory on Wednesday, saying bacteria levels were above the state water quality standards.

The VDH plans to test follow-up samples on Thursday. Health officials will continue to collect new samples and monitor the water until conditions are once again at safe levels.

Officials said anyone who came into contact with the water could face an elevated risk, especially children who are more likely to swallow the water or individuals who have open wounds or weakened immune systems.

During mid-May and mid-September, which is considered the peak swimming season, the Health Department frequently tests the water at various beaches to ensure it's safe.

A similar advisory was issued in late May for Buckroe Beach and several other beaches across Hampton Roads.
