HAMPTON, Va. — Swimmers are urged to stay out of the water at Buckroe Beach Middle in Hampton after discovering toxic bacteria in the area.
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) issued a swimming advisory on Wednesday, August 7, saying bacteria levels were above the state water quality standards.
Buckroe Beach South and Salt Ponds were originally also included in this swimming advisory, but follow-up sampling on Thursday showed bacteria levels met state water quality standards and the advisory for those areas was lifted.
Bacteria levels at Buckroe Beach Middle remain above safe swimming levels, and health officials said the swimming advisory will remain in place through the weekend.
Officials said anyone who came into contact with the water could face an elevated risk of illness, especially children who are more likely to swallow the water or individuals who have open wounds or weakened immune systems.
During mid-May and mid-September, which is considered the peak swimming season, the Health Department frequently tests the water at various beaches to ensure it's safe.
