HAMPTON, Va. — Hampton University is the final stop on U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy's national college tour.
The "We Are Made to Connect" tour features actor and mental health advocate Da'Vinchi, who uses his platform to shed light on mental health in communities of color. Their goal is to help college students focus on the importance of mental health, community, and connection.
Dr. Murthy hopes to inspire young people to combat loneliness, social isolation, and mental health challenges by incorporating connection into their daily lives. He encourages students to express gratitude, offer support, or ask for help in their social circles.
According to the Surgeon General's Advisory on loneliness, social connection can improve physical, mental, and cognitive health, and can even decrease the risk of mortality.
"Loneliness is a widespread national health problem - one that impacts young Americans at surprisingly high rates," Dr. Murthy said. "Just like exercise and nutrition, our relationships with one another are fundamental components of our overall health and well-being."
