State epidemiologist encourages Virginians to vaccinate in time for respiratory disease season

VIRGINIA, USA — Now is the time to start thinking about vaccinations, Virginia's state epidemiologist touted.

The respiratory disease season begins in October, and health professionals are urging people to take preventative measures.

A major factor in respiratory illness trends is vaccinations. Vaccines build up your immune system and help your body know how to fight against viruses.

"Protecting ourselves against these respiratory illnesses, COVID-19, flu, RSV, that still holds true right now. So now's the time to start thinking about those vaccines and getting that immune response on board," state epidemiologist Laurie Forlano said.

Despite a common misconception, you can get your flu, COVID, and RSV vaccines all at the same time.

"Some people recommend different arms. I preferred getting it all in one arm, but yes, you can get them at the same time," Forlano said.

COVID and flu vaccines are recommended for everyone from the age of six months and older. The RSV vaccine is highly recommended for adults over the age of 59, pregnant people, and infants.

Forlano said if you are sick, stay home to prevent transmission of viruses.
