NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- When you think of gynecology, you might think of a service for women age 18 and up. However, CHKD is providing these services for children and teens.
The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends young women have their first visit with a gynecologist between the ages of 13 and 15.
CHKD pediatric and adolescent gynecologist, Dr. Mariel Focseneanu says the first doctor's visit has three main purposes: Information, prevention and treatment.
The first visit may be just a talk between the teen and her doctor to establish trust and a level of comfort. You can find out what to expect at future visits and get information about how to stay healthy. A basic, non-internal examination is usually performed, but is not necessary if the person is not comfortable.
