Will wearing a mask protect you from getting the flu?

One local doctor says the masks are better at preventing sick people from spreading the flu than they are at protecting people from catching it.

NORFOLK -- One common sight during flu outbreaks is images of people wearing masks. Masks are the most popular accessory for people trying to protect themselves from the swine flu.

But will wearing a mask keep you healthy?

The answer is yes, and no.

David Halla at Gray's Pharmacy is having a hard time keeping face masks in stock.

"Wholesalers have put a freeze on distribution, and that is pending what the CDC rules are infectious areas," said Halla.

Experts say if you can't find a mask, don't be alarmed.

Dr. Bruce Britton says the masks are only somewhat effective. "If may do something, but I say that with a big 'may.' It's more for the sick person to prevent them from giving it to you than as a protection (for the wearer)."

Britton says that replacing the mask frequently is a must. Over time, the mask becomes like a sponge, collecting the germs you are trying to avoid.

"If you are going to use a mask over and over, it needs to be a cloth one, and as soon as you're done using it, throw it in the wash and wash it with hot water. Then you can reuse it again and it won't contaminate and bring the virus onto you."

Dr. Britton says washing your hands often and using hand sanitizer is the best defense against this rapidly spreading virus.

Britton also suggests that a mask could be important for someone taking care of a person with the flu.
