Virginia Department of Health announces 'second presumptive positive case' of coronavirus

The elderly resident recently traveled on a Nile River cruise in Egypt, health department officials said.

RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia Department of Health announced a "second presumptive positive case" of COVID-19 coronavirus in the state on Sunday morning.

The second case is a person in their 80s from Fairfax, Virginia.

Officials said the individual recently traveled on a Nile River cruise in Egypt.

The patient began to develop symptoms of respiratory illness on February 28. The patient was hospitalized on March 5 and remains in stable condition.

On Saturday, state health officials confirmed a U.S. Marine at Fort Belvoir had tested positive for the virus.

U.S. Dept. of Defense officials said the patient is currently being treated at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital.

The Marine recently returned from overseas, where he was on official business.

Health officials will provide more information on the two cases and what is being done to identify and monitor other close contacts and protect the health of Virginians.

To further lower the risk from spreading respiratory germs, including COVID-19, the Virginia Department of Health encourages the following effective behaviors:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer only if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with sick people.
