Hampton school closes after person possibly exposed to COVID-19 case

Andrews PreK-8 School closed on March 13 as a precaution after someone at the school came into contact with another person who has COVID-19.

HAMPTON, Va. — One Hampton school is closed on Friday after a possible coronavirus exposure was reported.

Hampton City Schools posted on Twitter that Andrews PreK-8 is closed on March 13 to all students and staff.

The move comes after an individual at the school came into contact with another person who has the novel coronavirus. The school division did not identify whether that individual is a student, teacher or faculty member.

As a precaution, school administrators have ordered that the school be deep-cleaned.

This isn't the only person in the area who may have been exposed. A student at Norfolk Academy is under self-quarantine after coming into contact with a person who has coronavirus. A staff member at William and Mary and a Regent faculty member are also self-monitoring for the same reason.

Several school systems around Hampton Roads, including Norfolk, Virginia Beach and York County have adjusted school schedules in order to hopefully control the possible spread of the virus.

Four local cases have been reported, including two in Virginia Beach and two in the greater Williamsburg area. As of March 13, 17 cases have been reported in Virginia.
