NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Employees of Newport News Shipbuilding will have an opportunity beginning Sunday night to prepare for whatever impact COVID-19 will have on their personal and family circumstances. The company will provide liberal leave to employees to make this practical.
In a post on their Facebook page, Newport News Shipbuilding described this as giving employees an opportunity to have "time to prepare as needed and to determine plans for family care."
The period in which liberal leave will be available will begin with third shift on Sunday, March 15, and run through second shift on Tuesday, March 17.
The post also said: "We anticipate the impact being long-term and are working on a plan to provide additional work schedule options and leave time options." They also said that parking and company-provided transportation would continue as normal.
They also pointed out that employees working at off-site locations would be required to follow any rules and protocols established at the particular facility at which they're working.
The shipyard also said that they had created a website specifically to curate information regarding how COVID-19 was impacting their employees and operations. The web address is: https://nns.huntingtoningalls.com/411
They said they would also be using several methods, including an employee information phone line, an employee app, company email, social media pages and their internal newsletter to disseminate information to their workforce.
