The Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters has developed a Center for Bone Health to help with the diagnosis and treatment of bones in children and teenagers.
CHKD utilizes the skills of a team of healthcare providers to help our growing children.
What is the Center for Bone Health and what types of services should parents and patients expect?
- Only Bone Health Clinic in Virginia exclusively for children
- Comprehensive approach focusing on fracture risk, accelerating healing, and preventing re-fractures
- Child will see entire bone health team: pediatric endocrinologists, pediatric orthopedic surgeons, dietitians, and exercise physiologists in one visit at one location
- Patients will undergo a single comprehensive eval, including assessment by registered dietitian and exercise physiologist, if necessary.
- Individualized care plan developed for each child, which may include lab testing, eval of bone density, medical treatments, nutrition interventions, physical activity recommendations, and follow-up care

- Children in need of bone mineral density evaluation
- Risk factors for low bone density include: Cancer, celiac disease, cystic fibrosis, eating disorders, muscular dystrophy, inflammatory bowel disease, repeated fractures, seizures, etc.
