Hampton officially has a new YMCA

Nearly three months after the ‘Sentara Hampton Health and Fitness Center’ left the Hampton ‘Careplex,’ a new YMCA is opening its doors for the first time.

HAMPTON, Va. — Inside the Hampton ‘Careplex,’ a new YMCA is opening its doors for the first time on Thursday.

Nearly three months ago the ‘Hampton Health and Fitness Center’ left. On its opening day, Thursday, a full crowd including city representatives welcomed the new ‘Y’ with open arms.

“It’s great, it’s very positive a lot of people coming out showing their support,” said Mayor for the City of Hampton, Donnie Tuck.

This new ‘Y’ is helping the community rediscover their fitness home.

“The YMCA saw an opportunity to serve and fill that gap and welcome them back to their home,” said the C.E.O for the YMCA Virginia Peninsula, Adam Klutts.

Klutts said this new YMCA serves as more than just a workout environment.

This new location will be the innovation hub for the company’s healthy living programs in the Virginia Peninsula.

That means new programs, like a pedaling class for people with Parkinson’s Disease, and a fitness group for cancer survivors will start here before going to another YMCA’s.

With new workout classes, equipment, and an updated pool former ‘Health and Fitness’ members said they’re happy to have a place nearby where they can invest in their health, once again.

“I love the classes, I love the staff and most importantly the atmosphere, you can’t beat the atmosphere here,” said YMCA member, Renelda George.

“Half of my neighborhood joined after I joined just because I was so enthusiastic and excited about the place,” said member Jan Smith.

Any can check out the open house on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Click here for more information.
