CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) - Hurricane Season starts Friday, June 1.
Governor Ralph Northam was in Hampton Roads to remind Virginians of Coastal Virginia's tiered evacuation zone program.
"It's not if these hurricanes are going to come, it really when and we just want everyone to be prepared," Northam said.
Governor Northam said it's important to know your zone and leave if there's an evacuation.
"We don't need people on the roads and highways. We need to let our first responders get in there and do their job," he said.
In 2016, Hurricane Matthew hit Hampton Roads, hard.
"It looked like something out of a movie," Chesapeake resident Angela Wilson said.
Wilson said almost two years later, she's still dealing with what the hurricane left behind. Her kitchen is still not completed. She has her appliances in the garage.
Wilson said four months before the storm, she canceled her flood insurance. She said if you don't have it, get it.
"Get flood insurance it doesn't matter, just get the flood insurance because you never know what is going to happen."
Governor Northam said if there's a hurricane, don't put your life in danger.
"Unfortunately we lose lives every year because of these storms and we want to do everything we can to keep all of Virginians safe," Northam explained.
