HAMPTON, Va. (AP) -- Fort Monroe will be getting into the
Halloween spirit as it offers visitors tours and spooky tales of
ghosts rumored to haunt the historic stone fort.
The Haunted Tours of Fort Monroe are scheduled nightly on Oct.
26-29, with proceeds benefiting the Hampton History Museum.
Historian and preservationist John Quarstein will lead the
90-minute tours along lantern-lit trails.
Fort Monroe is the former headquarters of the U.S. Army Training
and Doctrine Command. During the Civil War it was a Union-held
bastion, helping to shelter slave refugees. The Army deactivated
Fort Monroe last month, and current negotiations call for making at
least portions of the site a national park.
