RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The former register of deeds in a North Carolina county has turned herself in a day after she was among four people indicted in connection with the disappearance of more than $2 million from her office.
Local media outlets report Laura Riddick, the former register of deeds in Wake County, is charged of six counts of embezzlement over $100,000. She turned herself in on Wednesday at the Wake County Detention Center. After appearing before a magistrate, she posted bond of $700,000 and was released.
Riddick held the office from 1996 until her resignation earlier this year at the start of an investigation.
After workers in the office discovered irregularities in January, an SBI investigation requested by county officials determined that at least $2.3 million could not be accounted for.
