VALLEJO, CA. - One of the Minnesota Zoo's most enduring and popular animals has passed away after more than five decades of entertaining and educating patrons.
Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, CA announced Thursday the death of Semo the Dolphin at age 54. Semo was the oldest known male bottlenose dolphin living in captivity. Before moving to California he was a star attraction in Apple Valley, where he lived for 21 years.
Semo was moved when major repairs to his quarters in the Discovery Bay building became necessary. Soon after the Minnesota Zoo opted to discontinue its dolphin program.
“Semo was a ruggedly handsome, large, and imposing male, who was also infinitely joyful and playful,” Dianne Cameron, director of animal care for the park, told the Times Herald. “We feel so fortunate to have been a part of his life.”
Six Flags posted a farewell to Semo on his Facebook page, with other sad well-wishers offering their condolences.
“He remained always an inspiration and his dedicated animal staff’s ‘Sea Monster,’” the park posted.
“Godspeed, Sea Monster!” wrote a fan. “You will be missed.”
