NORFOLK(AP) -- Flood-prone Norfolk is one of eight cities nationwide chosen by the Rockefeller Foundation for a program to finance and build better storm water infrastructure.
The idea is to help prevent significant damage during severe weather like Superstorm Sandy. In Norfolk, city streets regularly flood during even minor rain storms.
The two-year initiative is intended to help cities rethink the way they design, plan, implement and finance urban infrastructure. The other cities chosen for the program on Wednesday are San Francisco, Miami Beach, Fla., Honolulu, New Orleans, Hoboken, N.J., El Paso, Texas and Milwaukee.
The Rockefeller Foundation has said it will provide up to $3 million in seed money for the RE.invest Initiative. The participating cities will receive technical assistance from private engineering, law and finance experts.
