Inmate hit female guard in Pasquotank Correctional Institution

The district attorney plans to take this before the next grand jury.

PASQUOTANK COUNTY, N.C. (WVEC) -- A Pasquotank Correctional Institution inmate hit a guard in the mouth Thursday afternoon.

The Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 4:30 p.m. about the incident.

According to officials, the male inmate split the female guard's lip. She was taken to urgent care where she was treated.

The district attorney plans to take this before the next grand jury.

On October 12, 2017, 4 employees from the Pasquotank Correctional Institution were killed during an attempted prison break.

The prison is in Rep. Bob Steinburg's district. When 13News Now asked him last week if it is safe for corrections officers to work in North Carolina Prisons, he said no.

Steinburg believed many of the problems at Pasquotank Correctional Institution also exists in the state's 55 prisons. He issued a chilling warning:

“If we don't get this under control; if we don't make a serious attempt at fixing this and fixing it once and for all, there are going to be, sadly, more murders that are going to take place in these prisons,” he said.
