Ex-Norfolk homicide detective convicted of extortion

Robert Glenn Ford got money in return for helping suspects get released on bond, reduced sentences and other favorable treatment, the U.S. Attorney said.

NORFOLK -- A former Norfolk police officer was convicted Wednesday of federal extortion charges.

Robert Glenn Ford, 56, got money in return for helping suspects get released on bond, reduced sentences and other favorable treatment, the U.S. Attorney said.

He falsely represented to prosecutors and judges that these individuals provided assistance in the investigation of homicides in the city, they said.

'Police corruption strikes at the heart of the justice system,' said U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride. 'Robert Ford betrayed both his fellow cops and the public, and disgraced his badge. It is an intolerable affront to the thousands of honest law enforcement officers. We will prosecute police corruption to the fullest extent of the law.'

Ford's sentencing is set for February 25, 2011.
