Virginia Wesleyan University to establish degree program for incarcerated persons

University president Scott Miller said VWU 'will be the first four-year institution in Virginia to take a degree program to people behind prison walls.'

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A school of international studies is coming to Virginia Wesleyan University, among other things.

In a state of the university address Friday, President Scott Miller highlighted some expansions coming to the university. 

That included an announcement that the school will open this month at its collaborative campus in Tokyo, Japan. It will create more opportunities for students here to study abroad.

The university is also partnering with the Urban League to establish an incarcerated persons re-entry program.

"We will be the first four-year institution in Virginia to take a degree program to people behind prison walls," Miller said.

The program is possible through a $1.17 million federal grant.

Virginia Wesleyan also announced a $2 million grant to provide scholarships for students interested in stem.
