Virginia considering new standards for English learning

Before the changes are implemented, the Virginia Board of Education wants to hear from teachers and parents.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Educators got the chance to share their thoughts on Virginia's new proposed English standards of learning Tuesday night.

In a virtual public comment session, a handful of people took the opportunity to discuss the changes that would have every child reading by third grade.

Before the changes are implemented, the Virginia Board of Education wants to hear from teachers and parents.

The education board expects to approve the new standards next month.

There is an in-person public hearing next Tuesday at Christopher Newport University. It starts at 6:30 p.m.

Public comment is open until March 1.
