NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State University (NSU) is considering increasing tuition for the 2024-25 school year, officials announced Wednesday.
The NSU Board of Visitors will consider raising the cost for tuition, fees, room and board at its May 3 Board of Visitors meeting. Final action can't happen until Virginia's state government approves a budget, though.
The increase would fund state-mandated salary increases, higher operating costs, and maintenance, according to the university.
The range for tuition and mandatory Education and General (E&G) fees is between a 0% and 3% increase, while non-E&G fees are between 0% and 5%. The cost of housing and board fee will increase from between 0% and 3%.
This proposed tuition and fee increase comes a week after Old Dominion University (ODU) hosted its public forum to look at possible tuition increases for both in-state and out-of-state students.
During the forum last Thursday, the ODU Board of Visitors discussed increasing tuition by up to 5% and mandatory fees by up to 7%.
ODU students expressed their concerns about the possible tuition increase with worries that they couldn't afford to attend.
"I'm kind of worried about it, but I'm like 50/50 about it. I think I'll have enough money for it, but if not, I'll just have to pick another place," ODU freshman Trinity Williams told 13News Now.
NSU is seeking feedback from the public before the Board of Visitors meeting. All comments and questions can be sent to cost-of-education@nsu.edu before May 2.
