SUFFOLK, Va. — Dozens of high school students gathered Wednesday at Kings Fork High School in Suffolk to learn about what historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have to offer.
The HBCU expo was sponsored by the Access College Foundation, an organization that helps high school students learn about and apply to college while assisting them through the financial aid and scholarship process.
The event featured representatives from at least 20 HBCUs. Students could ask questions about their academic offerings, as well as learn about clubs and activities.
Student Keshon Turner said he is not just looking for a school to attend after graduation, he's looking for a community of support. "A community that can back me up when I need it," he said. "A community that can provide me with the resources when I need it."
"It's a great opportunity for the student of Suffolk Public Schools and surrounding areas to come out and get some other options for college. We try to bring it to them because you know, a lot of these students can't get to these campuses," said Access College advisor Adrienne Miller.
Students can log onto commonblackcollegeapp.com in order to apply to more than 50 HBCUs with one application.
