NORFOLK, Va. — If you're near a Verizon Wireless retail stores on Sunday, you can stop by to get yourself or your student a free backpack.
Round Room, LLC is giving away $3 million worth of free backpacks for its 12th annual School Rocks Backpack Giveaway event. The organization aims to relieve some of the back-to-school financial burden that can be put on some families, especially with backpacks typically being a higher-ticket item.
The average cost of school supplies for families is around $890, according to Round Room.
Hundreds of families in the Hampton Roads area are expected to pack in to just over 25 Verizon locations on July 28 to pick up the free gift and also enjoy some fun games.
Backpacks in some locations are clear to accommodate school districts' requirements in response to increased gun violence.
