NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A new partnership aims to make it easier for community college students on the peninsula to transfer to complete a four-year degree.

Christopher Newport University (CNU) and Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC) announced the creation of a Bridge Program that "goes beyond current transfer agreements community colleges have with four-year colleges and universities by supporting students in new and different ways," a spokesperson for CNU said.

VPCC students wishing to move on to CNU can enter the Bridge Program and have the opportunity to gain need-based financial aid, priority consideration for campus housing, access to a variety of campus facilities and pre-advising services from CNU, all while they are still students at VPCC.

"Our shared goal is to streamline the process and provide a smoother transition for VPCC students to matriculate to Christopher Newport," said CNU President William Kelly in a news release. "We want all students to know our doors are open, and we’re ready to support them every step of the way. We commend President Brannon’s leadership and her continued advocacy toward making higher education broadly accessible to all students in our community."

A formal signing agreement between Kelly and VPCC President Towuanna Porter will be made at halftime during the CNU Men's Basketball game on Saturday, February 3.

According to the news release announcing the partnership:

To be eligible for the program, students must be accepted into the Bridge to CNU Program, enrolled in transfer-oriented associate degrees with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher, have earned at least 15 credits with a grade of C or higher at VPCC, and submit a Letter of Intent prior to their application to CNU.
