NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Christopher Newport University (CNU) is the latest school in Hampton Roads to share its plan for increasing tuition.
The university's Board of Visitors voted to raise tuition, fees and room and board by 2.9% beginning Fall 2024. In a statement from CNU's Chief Communication Officer, the board unanimously adopted the resolution.
The resolution shares that CNU has maintained tuition for the past five years. This was achieved through cost-containment strategies and budget supplements from federal and state stimulus funds. It also shares that those funds are now exhausted.
The Board of Visitors say their decision to increase tuition and fees was influenced by these funds being exhausted, and that the Commonwealth has cut back on its share of funding over time to public higher education, leaving more responsibility to the institutions and its students and families.
However, the resolution also shares that this tuition recommendation increase of 2.9% falls below the projected increase of 5%.
This comes shortly after Old Dominion University (ODU) and Norfolk State University (NSU) shared their considerations to increase tuition for the upcoming academic year.
In March, ODU hosted a public forum with their Board of Visitors where they discussed increasing tuition by up to 5% and mandatory fees by up to 7%.
The William & Mary Board of Visitors will host a public hearing on April 24 to share an overview of their proposed increases to tuition and fees. The NSU Board of Visitors will decide in their meeting on May 3.
No final action can happen until the 2024 General Assembly approves a budget. The budget is expected to be updated during a Special Session on May 13.
