HAMPTON, Va. — More than 400 students at Bethel High School got a big surprise on Wednesday morning.
Allen Iverson announced that to celebrate the launch of his new sneaker line with Reebok, the brand would cover the fees of college applications for all rising seniors.
"What up yall, I got Reebok to cover your college application fees so skies the limit and you'll get a new pair of kicks," Iverson said in a video announcement at a special school assembly Wednesday.
Iverson attended Bethel High School and credits it with launching him onto the path of becoming an NBA legend.
Students said it could be a game-changer when it came to applying to more schools.
"I was honestly at a loss for words," said Junior Jaelyn Matthews. "I was just talking to my parents about college application fees and then when he said it, it was so ironic."
"I plan to go to college, I don't know where but seeing the college applications that he did for us, I'm still shocked man, I'm still shocked, it's crazy," said Junior Kaylan Brown.
Reebok will also give select students nationwide the same opportunity to have their college application fees covered. Rising seniors can apply at Reebok.com.
