VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Kempsville Middle School experienced two incidents on Monday that prompted weapons searches from the school resource officer. In both cases, no weapons were found, but at least two students will be disciplined.
The following letter was provided to Kempsville Middle School parents from Principal Tamara Cornick-Leonard:
Good afternoon, Kempsville Middle School families,
Regrettably, we had two incidents I want to make you aware of today. First, I want to address an incident in which one of our students made a statement to cause harm to another student. Immediately upon receiving this information, we took swift action to ensure the safety of our students and staff.
The school’s administration, school resource officer, and the Office of Security and Emergency Management have addressed this matter. A search was conducted, and no weapon was found. The student will be disciplined according to the code of conduct.
Secondly, we had a student use a Chromebook to send a threatening message to another student. The situation was investigated by the administration, the Office of Security and Emergency Management and the school resource officer. A search was conducted, and no weapon was found. The student will be disciplined in accordance with the student code of conduct.
We ask you to take this opportunity to speak with your child about the appropriate ways to express frustration or emotions. Comments, even intended as a joke, can lead to serious consequences including disciplinary action and/or criminal charges.
If students see or hear something concerning, they should report it immediately to the police or an adult.
Thank you for your continued support of Kempsville Middle School.
