Second woman shot on Melville Road in Hampton in a week

Police say a 19-year-old woman was sitting on the street when someone walked up to her and opened fire.

HAMPTON, Va. — Late Sunday night, Hampton Police said an adult woman was shot in the 400 block of Melville Road.

The call came in around 11:20 p.m. Police stayed on the scene past midnight.

They say a 19-year-old woman had been shot and had to be taken to the hospital.

A tweet from the division said the victim's injuries weren't life-threatening. They did not detail where she was shot.

Investigators later revealed that the woman was sitting in a car on Melville Road when someone walked up to her and opened fire.

Michael Kilcrease was in his Hampton home Sunday night with his wife and five children when shots rang out.

"I feel like this is going to keep happening until someone dies," Kilcrease said. "We heard arguing and then all of a sudden, pops, like 20 gunshots and we laid on the floor hoping nothing came in the house."

Kilcrease says the shooting was across the street from his home.

"It's sad because they're young kids," Kilcrease said. "Why do they have to do this to each other, especially with guns?"

Officers were called to Melville Road last week after they said someone shot another 19-year-old woman during a party. Police don’t know if both shootings are connected.

Police said they were called to Melville Road two additional times last week.

Officer say on Thursday at approximately 4:57 p.m. they responded to the 400 block of Melville Road for a shots fired call. The investigation revealed that a residence had been struck by gunfire, but there were no injuries sustained. The call on Friday appears to be related.

A police spokesman said patrols will be increased in that neighborhood. Investigators believe the victims in these cases were not selected at random. He adds, that as with all cases successful investigations depend on cooperative victims and witnesses.

HPD is asking for the community’s cooperation in coming forward with any information that might help police.

Right now, there is no suspect information in either shooting incident.

Kilcrease is considering moving for his family's safety. He said this is too close for comfort.

"We're scared, not wanting to leave the house again," Kilcrease said.

Police say both victims were uncooperative in the investigation. They have not said if they are searching for a suspect in this case.
