NORFOLK, Va. — Following a guilty plea on Tuesday, a woman was convicted of grand larceny, failure to appear, providing false identification to avoid arrest and forgery, the Office of Commonwealth's Attorney said Wednesday.
The conviction of Jessica Lynn Nave, 37, comes after she burglarized a man's home and pretended to be her sister once she was arrested.
On July 26, 2020, officials say Nave and two others broke into a home on Wingfield Road. Nave damaged items and stole property.
Officials said a neighbor's home surveillance camera caught the burglary and Nave's getaway car.
The next day Norfolk police officers spotted the car and attempted to make a traffic stop but the driver sped off. That officer spotted the car behind the burglarized home later and arrested the suspects inside, including Nave.
When Nave was arrested on multiple felonies connected to the burglary, officials say she falsely identified herself using her sister's name.
Nave was later released on bond.
Nave then failed to appear at her arraignment hearing in Norfolk General District Court, resulting in another felony charge being issued under her sister's name.
Once her sister cleared her name with police, Nave was charged with providing a false ID to avoid arrest and felony forgery.
Nave is slated to be sentenced on April 26.
“The crimes that these codefendants committed harmed the victim and endangered the public,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi. “These cases show how every sanction is tailored to the individual person, using the appropriate combination of rehabilitation and accountability, including through our Drug Court and Mental Health Court programs. We will continue to offer the tools people need to become productive and law-abiding citizens.”
