Woman arrested for arson at Elizabeth City church

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Tuesday night around 11:30 p.m., Elizabeth City police responded to a call at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 600 West Ehringhaus St.

An eyewitness reported seeing a person fleeing from the premises after setting a bush outside of the church on fire. 

The person was later identified as Carrietta Johnson Spence, who was arrested a few blocks away from the church without incident. 

Spence has been charged with injury to real property and burning of churches and certain other religious buildings. She is currently being held at the Albemarle District Jail on a $10,000 bond. 

She will appear tomorrow morning at the Pasquotank County District Court.
