Woman accused of eluding police after shooting in Newport News

34-year-old Gabrielle Piggott was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, evading police, and multiple gun charges.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A woman faces a list of charges after allegedly shooting someone, and then trying to escape police. 

Investigators said it happened in Newport News on Friday night. Officers were called to Savage Drive, not far from the Village Square Shopping Center. On their way to the scene, they saw a car matching the suspect description. But when they tried to approach on foot, the driver allegedly sped away.

She didn't get far. Newport News police said the car crashed into four other cars near the Newport News/Williamsburg Airport entrance.

The driver, 34-year-old Gabrielle Piggott, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, evading police, and multiple gun charges. 

The shooting victim, an adult man, took himself to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two crash victims also went to the hospital as a precaution and are expected to be OK.
