NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. — Virginia State Police (VSP) is investigating after a body was found in a vehicle that caught fire on the Eastern Shore Wednesday morning.

Just after 8:45 a.m., VSP was alerted to a vehicle fire in the 10100 block of Lankford Highway, just north of Birdnest Drive in Northampton County.

The vehicle, a light blue 2002 Honda Sport with Maryland plates, was seen parked at the same location since 5 a.m. that morning but was not seen on fire until just before 9 a.m.

Once crews extinguished the flames, a body was found in the passenger seat of the vehicle. VSP took the body to the Office of the Medical Examiner for an autopsy and identification.

This investigation is led by the VSP Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Chesapeake Field Office. The Northampton County Sheriff's Office is helping with the investigation.

VSP asks anyone who may have seen the vehicle earlier in the morning or any suspicious activity near the vehicle before 9 a.m. to contact them at 804-750-8788. You can also send an email to questions@vsp. virginia.gov.
