VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A 25-year-old woman was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the shooting death of her boyfriend in 2023, the Virginia Beach Commonwealth's Attorney announced Monday.
A'lycia Coleman's sentence comes after she pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and use of a firearm charges.
The charges stem from Jul 27, 2023, when Coleman and her boyfriend, Josiah Chambers, were arguing in their Virginia Beach home on Lake Edward Drive, with officials claiming the couple began grabbing each other.
According to the Commonwealth, Chambers and his sibling then went downstairs where Coleman eventually followed them with a gun in hand. Coleman allegedly threatened to shoot Chambers before firing a shot, striking him once in the torso.
Chambers' sibling then called 911 to report the incident. Chambers was taken to the hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Coleman told detectives she did shoot Chambers but only meant to scare him, the Commonwealth said.
