Man shot by Virginia Beach police to face charges

Virginia Beach police claim 32-year-old Brian Besecker confronted them with a gun on Friday. He was shot by two officers.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Police in Virginia Beach said its officers were involved in a shooting that critically injured a man Friday night.

According to the Virginia Beach Police Department, officers were called to the Linkhorn Bay Apartments on Riverfront Court shortly after 7 p.m. for a reported dispute.

When they arrived at the home, officers say 32-year-old Brian Besecker answered the door and allegedly confronted them with a gun. Two of the officers then shot the man.

Medics took Besecker to the hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition.

By Saturday morning, neighbors said this area of Virginia Beach was relatively quiet. Isaac Mullins, who lives at the complex, said it was a typical Friday at his home.

“Me and my girlfriend and a couple of friends were just in our apartment," he said. "We were hanging out just watching a movie."

Then, Mullins says he noticed something unusual.

“We just started hearing sirens," he explained. "We heard one or two. Then, it just kept building and building and building.”

Mullins said he could see the scene from his apartment window.

“Ten cop cars and a fire truck, an ambulance," he said. "It was pretty wild. I wasn’t expecting any of that on a normal night.”

Another neighbor, who wanted to remain anonymous, said he’s never seen so many officers at the complex, which is a cause for concern. Mullins said the large police presence still has him a bit shaken up.

“It’s pretty crazy," he said. "You kind of go on high alert. You don’t know what’s going to happen next.”

On Saturday evening, police updated to say Besecker is charged with three counts of assault on a law enforcement officer and one count of domestic assault. More charges are pending.

The officers involved in the shooting are on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Police said the VBPD Homicide Unit is handling the investigation, which will then be reviewed by the Virginia Beach Office of the Commonwealth Attorney (OCA). The OCA will also be conducting its own review into the shooting.
