Accused GameStop robber switches not guilty plea to guilty

James Gregory is facing several charges, but Wednesday's trial involves an attempted robbery in Hampton.

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- The trial for a man allegedly connected to three different crime scenes across Hampton Roads began Wednesday.

James Gregory was on trial after detectives say he was part of an armed robbery of a Hampton GameStop last year.

Gregory pleaded guilty to 16 charges after originally pleading guilty to 15 charges against him. The plea change came after hearing the evidence against him and after a judge denied the defense’s motion to strike several charges.

His co-defendants will be in court on later dates.

Police said on June 12, 2017 Gregory, along with Leonard Morrison and Allen Ralph, robbed GameStops in Chesapeake and Hampton.

Morrison and Gregory are also charged in a deadly double shooting in Virginia Beach, just two days before the GameStop robberies. Morrison was later shot multiple times following a shootout with police.

Detectives said the two admitted to being involved.

Commonwealth's Attorney Anton Bell says if Gregory would have been convicted by the jury, he would have faced a minimum of 128 years in jail.

Sentencing is set for June 15 at 2 p.m.
