Teen arrested nearly two years after 15-year-old killed in Newport News

Police took a 17-year-old into custody Tuesday for charges of second-degree murder and several weapon offenses.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Newport News police arrested a 17-year-old boy in connection to the shooting death of a 15-year-old boy in 2022.

Police took the teen into custody Tuesday for charges of second-degree murder and several weapon offenses. 

The shooting happened on October 14, 2022, in the 800 block of Walden Pond Court. There, officers found a 15-year-old boy with a gunshot wound. Medics took the teen to the hospital, where he died the next day

Because the victim and suspect are minors, Newport News police are not releasing their names.

Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew released the following statement on the arrest:

“I want to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who played a role in solving this case. Through your tireless work, we were able to bring some closure to a family who continues to suffer the loss of their young son."
