Police search for suspect in Newport News after fleeing traffic stop, crashing, seriously injures passenger

VSP says a trooper saw a car run a stop sign early Wednesday. The driver then crashed into a utility pole near Warwick Blvd, seriously injuring his passenger.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Police are searching for a suspect driver after fleeing from police and crashing into a utility pole which injured a passenger early Wednesday.

Virginia State Police say that a trooper saw a Chevrolet Impala run through a stop sign in Newport News around 1:50 a.m. The trooper turned on emergency lights and siren for a traffic stop. Then the Impala began fleeing at a high rate of speed.

Moments later, the Impala ran off the road and struck a utility pole at the intersection of J. Clyde Boulevard and Warwick Boulevard.

The male driver fled on foot afterward. A man who was a passenger in the vehicle was taken to the Riverside Regional Hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

State police and Newport News police set up a perimeter to search for the suspect. He has not yet been found.
