NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- The person accused of murdering a Norfolk State University football player made his first appearance in court Monday.
Police charged Jaquan Anderson in the killing of Nicholas Ackies this past weekend. Anderson is a former NSU player, himself.
Ackies, an 18-year-old freshman, died Friday evening, one day before NSU's homecoming game. Norfolk police said the shooting happened on Hayes Street, which is about 10 minutes away from campus, around 6 p.m.
Several sheriff's deputies escorted Anderson into the courtroom Monday. Three of the deputies wore tactical gear.
During the arraignment, the judge said Anderson faced charges of Use of a Firearm, and Second Degree Murder.
Anderson chose to be represented by a court-appointed attorney. He currently is being held without bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for January 11, 2018.
Anderson played for NSU in 2015. Both the suspect and victim are from Richmond.
