PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A man has been arrested after allegedly firing at officers and hitting a police vehicle in Portsmouth on Monday, officials say.
Portsmouth police say that around 2 a.m., they responded to a report of shots fired near High Street and Dinwiddie Street. Officers were told the suspect was a man wearing a gray hoodie.
While patrolling, police came under fire. Police Chief Stephen Jenkins says the suspect shot at officers 16 times. Police say they took the suspect, who matched the earlier description, into custody in the 400 block of Queen Street.
He has been identified as 39-year-old Anthony David Vega and charged with attempted murder.
Police did not give any other details about the incident.
